Volcom today said it will intensify its focus on the foundational core sports upon which the brand was founded over 20 years ago and exit motocross. The company officially launched its motocross program in 2009 and amassed an impressive riding team of world-class athletes, including superstar Ryan Villopoto, the 2011, 2012 and 2013 AMA Supercross Champion. As the first company to formally blend the 3 primary board sports together from day one, Volcom will remain devoted to skate, snow and surf, along with music and art.

“In an increasingly competitive and specialized global market it is imperative that we continue to simplify the Volcom brand message so that we can achieve maximum differentiation and voice amplification,” said Jason Steris, Volcom’s CEO. “We have been extremely proud to have been a part of the motocross family for several years. However, pressing forward with all of our emphasis on board sports is the right direction for Volcom for the long term.”

“I am very proud to have been part of the Volcom motocross program from the beginning and am grateful for the warm reception and regular acceptance from a world-class community of athletes, teams, media, agents and promoters,” said Troy Powell, Volcom’s MX Marketing Senior Manger.

“I understand this was a difficult decision for Volcom but I support the company’s vision and the need to retain its focus on its core boarding sports. Combined with my earlier years in the Volcom surf program, it has been a tremendous experience being part of an amazing company and I now look forward to new ventures.” Powell joined Volcom in 1996 and will always be a part of the Volcom family.

“The motocross team has done an exceptional job helping our company gain an admirable standing in this sport,” said Ryan Immegart, Volcom’s Senior Vice President of Marketing. “With Troy at the helm, our accomplishments are many and I am thankful for his stewardship and relentless passion toward making an indelible mark in motocross. As well, we could not have achieved so much without Ryan Villopoto and the rest of our team riders.”

Well it certainly wasn’t at the Iden track, as Gest Mx, hosted Rd 4 of the South-eastern MX Centres, Summer Series. There was a chill in the air and coats and hoodies were the order of the day rather than factor 30 sun cream! The track prep had been done and the riders were raring to go as always with the Experts kick starting the days racing!

The expertise of David Williams & Dean Simes was exciting to watch as the frill of the chase was so intense between the guys. What a game of cat & mouse they played & with young Ben Franklin also cutting in on the act too, their podium finishes were worth all the hard work, the three lads put in!

GEST - Iden 9th June 2013

Once the heat races were over, the dust filled the air, as the Junior A group got off to a flying start as the riders tussled around the first bend. Gunning for the top spots was Craig Down, Kray Still & Jordan Moyle. Both Down & Still took a win each with Down just getting the advantage for the overall top spot & Still in second overall. Moyle’s 2-6 finish gave him a well-earned third overall.

Next up was the Junior B group & just as hungry too! With almost a full line up heading out of the start gates, once again the dust was flying, as they tore up the track. James Johnston was the man up front taking the win in both blocks for a group overall. Lloyd Sunley & Ray Chivers may have taken a second place finish each but it was Greg Marshall’s 3-3 finish that secured second overall with Sunley third.

Out last for the adults were the Junior C group & they didn’t disappoint the waiting spectators, as they dug in deep and proved to be just as entertaining as race groups A & B. All guns were blazing as Lewis Wigger, Nathan Bridgeland and Shane Cory tried to reel in those podium finishes. It was Wigger who came out on top with Bridgeland second and Cory in third overall.

More action was in store from the BWs & SWs as they took their positions on the start line before heading out together when the gates dropped. Tom Lockhart put in a superb run & bagged himself a premier overall result in the BWs with Freddie McPherson taking second, who had been hot on Lockhart’s case. Well-deserved! Third went Danny Taylor’s way after his 3-4-2 secured a done deal. Now in the SWs you wouldn’t have thought that Ashley Surridge had only moved up into the group this season as he looked so comfortable on the bike & did superbly to take the group overall after battling hard against Adam Caroleo and Daniel Brooks who took the remaining positions on the podium.

A special thank you must go to all those who marshalled throughout the day, especially the reserves that were called upon in the afternoon because without you guys stepping up when needed the race meeting would never of been able to continue. So remember guy’s fairs, fair to all pull together & take our turn at marshalling or the race meetings can’t run!

Reported By Tracey Whittam

Saturday evening at the historic Maggiora circuit for the Italian Grand Prix saw the brand new 2014 YZ450F and 250F unveiled to the international press and many local fans with the factory Monster Energy team given the honours of uncovering the progressive new technology for the first time in Europe.

Joel Roelants, Dean Ferris, Christophe Charlier, Mel Pocock, Maxime Desprey as well as Yamaha Motor Europe representatives stood side-by-side for one of the most important Yamaha photo opportunities of the year, at the midway point of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

The feeling of nostalgia at Maggiora – back on the Grand Prix calendar for the first time this century and one of the special sites for motocross in Italy – was increased at the Yamaha event with the presence of Andrea Bartolini’s remarkable 1999 500cc World Championship winning YZ400f.

It’s cool to see the new 450F for the first time and it definitely looks the part,” commented Ferris, scorer of two podium results this year with his works YZ250F, “I’ve heard good things about the engine and although I haven’t ridden it yet just seeing it now really makes me want to have a go.

The 2014 YZ250F features a brand new rear-slanted fuel injected motor with ‘snaking’ exhaust pipe system while the larger brother boasts a new chassis and further mass centralisation with Yamaha’s most useable and tractable engine yet.

Today Suzuki released details of their 2014 RMZ 450 and 250 motocross motorcycles.

For 2014, the Suzuki RM-Z450 and RM-Z250 feature updated ECM ignition programs that improve starting, as well as race-inspired Champion Yellow-and-black graphics to best fit each bike’s high-performance character. These upgrades show Suzuki’s continued commitment to the already-strong performance of its RM-Z450 and RM-Z250, facts proven in part by Cycle World magazine’s repeat acknowledgement of the RM-Z450 as Best Motocrosser in 2011 and 2012. And in 2013, both the RM-Z450 and RM-Z250 was chosen by Transworld MX as their bikes of the year. The RM-Z450 was also selected as the class-leader by RacerX.

“By delivering these refinements for 2014, the Suzuki RM-Z450 and RM-Z250 will continue to lead their classes,” said Derek Schoeberle, Product Media Relations Manager for SMAI. “These products are proof that manufacturing and selling category-leading motorcycles takes more than just one year. A combination of superior development, proven craftsmanship, and ongoing owner support helps Suzuki, its dealers and its riders earn multiple championships.”

The 2014 RM-Z450 and RM-Z250 retain the “Champion Approved” features and performance that have lead racers nationwide to select yellow motorcycles as their racing equipment. For years, top racers have chosen to ride Suzuki, including Yoshimura Suzuki rider James Stewart and Ricky Carmichael, whose RCH Racing team competes on Suzuki RM-Zs.
