Big entry for “Simon Rees memorial” Hare ‘n Hounds

An excellent entry of 80 riders competed in Rhayader Motor Clubs 9th annual running of the “Simon Rees memorial” Hare ‘n Hounds at Cwmythig Hill last Sunday. The Club had set out a 3-mile circuit including the popular Hillside motocross circuit as well as nearby fields, which resulted in some excellent racing in all classes.

Local rider Simon Williams (Kerry) led the field away from the mass start, but hot on his heels was local ace Shaun Buchan (Llanbister). By the end of the gruelling 3 hour non-stop race it was Williams who took the honours with 19 laps to his credit, while Buchan took runner-up spot 1½ minutes down on Williams, while Ash Newton (Peterchurch) finished third just over 40 seconds behind Buchan.

On-form Luke Williams (Welshpool) swept up the Clubman class with 18 laps, while youngster Jack Powell (Cwmbran) secured runner up spot also on 18 laps. Aaron Martin (Llandrindod Wells) took a very creditable 3rd spot just over a minute behind Powell.

The Novice class saw Will Green (Llandrindod Wells) take the win with 17 laps just beating off nearest rival Gavin Zembrzuski (Llandrindod Wells). Dafydd Wyn Thomas (Machynlleth) finishing in 3rd a further 2½ minutes down on Zembrzuski.

Ryan Leary (Gorseinon) went away with the premier award in the very competitive Over 40’s section with 18 laps, Ray Whittle (Minsterly) took 2nd a lap down on Leary & Hayden Bowen (Llanidloes) 3rd.

Topping the Beginners class was youngster Adam James (Rhayader) completing a well earned 18 laps as well as picking up the “Simon Rees Memorial Cup”, Alwyn Watkins (Bwlch-y-Sarnau) pushed James hard early on in the race, but had to settle with the runner up spot with 17 laps, third went to Craig Morgan (Staunton-on-Wye) 16 laps, while Gareth Joyce (Llandrindod wells) finished up in 4th on15 laps. .

Taking the honours in the Motocross group was Rhayader’s Ryan Jones completing 16 laps.

As well as catering for Solo’s, Rhayader Motor Club also had a large Sidecars group.

Top in the Sidecars section were the on-form David Williams/Graham McPhee (Llanidloes/Rhayader) with 17 laps, Alun Davies/Barry Ferguson (Caio) a lap down ended up in 2nd with Steve Price/Aled Lloyd-Jones (Talerddig) a further 2 laps down in 3rd, while local Father/Son crew Tim Wilkinson/Sam Wilkinson (Newbridge on Wye) finished a fine fourth on 14 laps.
