Brad Anderson started the defence of his Red Bull championship with a dominant double win over MX 1 GP rider Shaun Simpson at Fatcats near Doncaster on Sunday.
In the first national-class race to be held on the deep sand circuit adjacent to the old Armthorpe track, PAR Honda man Ando came out on top of a mammoth three-way scrap for victory in the first race from Simpson and KTM’s Martin Barr after they had overhauled fast-starting Tom Church.
CCM man Church is still not fully fit after a recent bout of flu and he couldn’t keep up the pace on the super-rough circuit.
It was a CCM that also led the second race, as Steven Sword pulled the holeshot. But he was soon overtaken by Simpson and Anderson. At the end of the first lap, Simpson led but Ando flew right past on a tough rhythm section and cleared off to an unchallenged win by almost six seconds. Swordy hung on for third, but was 42 seconds back.
Ando was so dominant, he lapped up to 12th place which was Scott Elderfield on the 250F Kawasaki. The race has MX1 and MX2 combined and Elderfield was third overall in MX2, behind Suzuki’s Mel Pocock.
None of the MX2 riders could get near Honda’s Elliott Banks-Browne who romped to two victories despite injuring his ankle in a horrific crash at the end of qualifying.
In the other classes, former GP rider John Pettitt made a return to racing after more than a year out and won the 125 two-stroke class from Nathan Rooks, while brothers Nathan Watson and Ben Watson cleaned up in the Rookie class and big-wheel 85cc classes respectively.
