Desertmartin prepares for round 5

The fifth round of the Maxxis British Motocross Championship is set to roll into the world famous Desertmartin Motocross track nearby Cookstown on Sunday 24th June for this prestigious event promoted by the Cookstown & District Motocross Club.

The event will see the best riders from all over the UK and Ireland compete against a flavour of international riders from Lithuania , Holland , Belgium, New Zealand and South Africa to name a few, all looking to take the spoils in the MX1 , MX2 and MXY2 British Championship Classes.

After enduring four hard fought rounds in England already, the championships remain wide open as the series moves to Desertmartin where a number of top riders from here in Northern Ireland, out to prove that they can not only race with the best, but in some cases, even eyeing those podium places in their respective classes.

Doagh man, Martin Barr, recently changed teams to join forces with the Moneymore based, Tyco Suzuki team where he has wasted no time posting his first overall win on-board the new Tyco Suzuki machinery at Fatcats Moto Park in Lancashire a few weeks back. With that win under his belt he will be confident of his chances in the MX1 class if he makes use of his home advantage to get his British season back on track.

Graeme Irwin from Carrickfergus will be out to show what more he can do in the MX2 class where he has already posted two overall podium finishes in this year. Son of former road racer, Alan Irwin, Graeme is one of the finest riders to watch on the British circuit. His exuberant style and desire to win means he is a dream rider for the spectators to follow around this fantastic race track.

Graeme will be aiming to take his Samsung Yamaha to helm of the MX2 class at ‘The Desert‘, a track which he has described in previous interviews as his favourite track in the world, and a track that will also be lined with a couple of thousand screaming Irish fans urging him on.

World Superbike Rider, Jonathan Rea’s JAR Honda Team, will be in attendance flying the local flag with Wayne Garrett going for a top ten finish in the MX1 class and Michael McCammond hoping for a good finish in the MX2 class. Cookstown club member, John Meara, will also be hoping for a good finish in the MX2 class while his younger brother Jason will contest the MXY2 class.

So it will be all to play for come 24th June as each of the classes has a full entry packed full of the best British Motocross has to offer, mixed with a taste of international stars. Overnight camping is available on the Saturday Night for those who might be traveling long distances and is priced at £10.00 per vehicle. Admission to the event is £20.00 per adult, £5.00 for under 16s while under 10s are admitted free. Spectators can pay at the gate on the day to gain admission and free parking is provided by the club for all spectators.

Desertmartin Motocross Circuit boasts only the best facilities in Northern Ireland Motocross for visiting riders and spectators so the day will be accessible for all the family. The spectacular sandy circuit has many excellent hard standing spectator areas that have views across the majority of the track while still keeping you right beside the action.

With this event being the only top class international motocross event to be staged in Northern Ireland during 2012 it is definitely one not to be missed so get your family and friends to Desertmartin on Sunday 24th June for an excellent day’s entertainment.

The circuit is located on the Rectory Road, Tobermore (BT45 5QW) and it will be signposted from nearby towns. The Cookstown Club have worked tirelessly to stage this event and would like to thank all their sponsors for their individual support in the run up to the event.
