Dennis Verbruggen on his 2009 MX2 World Championship, was it a good or bad season? Here’s what he had to say.
Dennis , You’ve just wrapped up your GP -season. Are you satisfied about it?
“Yeah, sure. I’m pretty pleased with it. The season start was quite difficult though. The bike wasn’t as competitiveas it could be, which caused some frictions between me and the team. But we ironed all these differences out. After two bad GP’s I choose not to ride in Turkey. That really was the turning point of my season. The team was still behind me which boosted my morale. Looking back, I am sure LS Motors-Honda has had a top season with both riders putting in some very good results.
I hope to be able to find a team to contest next year’s World Championship. Actually I’m still negociating with LS Motors-Honda about 2010 as well. It doesn’t really matter whether it’s in MX1 or MX2. If somebody comes up with an opportunity I will surely grab it with both hands. Using this winter to thoroughly prepare the new season.”
Which class do you prefer yourself, MX1 or MX2?
“MX1 wouldn’t be no wrong move. As I have to move up in 2011 anyway. Also, you definitely need one year to adapt to MX1, unless your name is Cairoli off course! I reckon MX1 will be even stronger next year, while the talent pool will be a bit less in MX2. On the other hand I’m convinced to be able to run consistently in the top 5 next year. My speed is definitely there. But I first have to check out my options.”
Apart from a good year on track, you also had quite an evolution as a person.
“Absolutely. I’m just a lot more mature than I was, last year. Marnicq Bervoets has tought me a lot of things. Not so much riding wise, but more about being a proper sportsman. As a result I’m eating a lot healthier now, something which has already improved my shape. But I am also really grateful toward Steven (Lettani, the LS Motors-Honda team manager and owner). By giving me a ride he took a huge risk. After my awful 2008 season nobody wanted to take the risk to work with me. Except for LS Motors-Honda off course. I’m really glad I bounced back. Not only as a motocross rider but also on a personal level. ”
With the GP’s done and dusted for you, what else is in store for the remainder of the season?
“In september I’ll fully focus on the two remaining Belgian Championship races. Since Nismes I’m riding an CRF450R in the Belgian Nationals. These races are jut the ideal try-out to see where I’m at on an MX1 bike. Orp-le-Grand will be a bit tricky.
We’ll just have to see how good my arm will be. I needed to take quite some painkillers to be able to ride at Lierop, so you got to look at that as well. But I definitely think I can do good at Mont-Saint-Guibert, which is the last round of the Belgian Championships. The rhythm in the Belgian MX1 Championship is definitely high, but the same goes for the MX2 GP’s. I think I have the speed to be up there with the best. I’m not doing the last Dutch Open MX2 race, since there’s nothing in it for me.”
