Jonathan Barragan grabs first 2012 GP podium in France!

LS Honda Racing’s Jonathan Barrgan was a forceful wildcard presence at the second round of ten in the 2012 FIM MX3 Motocross World Championship staged at Castelnau de Levis. Jonathan took his CRF450R to second and third place finishes in the two motos. Overall the Spanish champion placed third behind home riders Cedric Soubeyras and Gregory Aranda.

A weekend off from MX GP racing provided the perfect opportunity for Jonathan to sample the nice and technical hard pack track of Castelnau, in the south of France (Midi-Pyrenées). After the Spanish GP in Alhama de Murcia in 2008 this was also his second ever MX3 appearance! However Barragan was not the only MX1 rider to come out and play because Rui Goncalves, Cédric Soubeyras, Gregroy Aranda and Milko Potisek were competing as well.

In qualifying the LS Honda Racing rider was fourth of the gate, while he quickly moved up to third a small slip prevented Jonathan from fighting for the win. In the end it was Soubeyras who took the pole on a track that had largely dried out but still provided some muddy corners. For most of the race Barragan had been chasing Goncalves to come home third 1,5 seconds behind his fellow Honda colleague.

Changing weather conditions and rain had an impact on Sunday’s racing as well. After touching Aranda in the start Barragan found himself way down the order around 20th position. All fired up he made his way through the pack, posted the fastest time of the race, to catch all but one rider! But building on his pole from Saturday it was SX specialist Soubeyras who claimed victory. For the second 35 minute plus two lap sprint Barragan had a great start in second place. Unfortunately a small crash relegated ‘JB7’ to tenth. Another push to the front delivered a second fastest lap of the race and a recovery to third place behind Aranda and Soubeyras.

Joanthan Barragan: “This weekend was a great practice on hard pack to prepare for the Bulgarian GP. Although the rain made things a little bit complicated as well. Especially in the second moto it started to rain pretty hard! We were not really lucky in the races, but I was happy with my riding and with the feeling on the bike. I came here to fight for the GP win, so it’s a pity that I didn’t get to the top step of the podium. Still it’s good to go to Sevlievo with a GP podium under my belt.”
