Tony Craig on top at Scottish Championship round 3

Riders from all over Scotland and beyond made their way to the Achnashelloch track near Lochgilphead for the third round of the Scottish Championships at the weekend. The picturesque, flowing track had a major revamp by the Mid Argyll Motocross Club in the preceding weeks and the riders were presented with a well watered track in perfect condition.

When the gate dropped for the first Safe Access MX1 race Tony Craig made his intentions clear by blasting into a lead which he held to the flag. Current champion, Ross Rutherford, could not match Craig’s pace with Ryan McLean pushing eventual runner up, Rutherford , all the way to flag. The second race followed a very similar pattern to the first with Rutherford having to work a bit harder for his second place after a poor start. It looked like it was going to be three out of three in the third race until Craig damaged a tyre at about half distance. Craig rode using all he knew to try to keep Rutherford behind him but Ross eventually cruised by to take the win. Ryan McLean was next to pass the ailing Craig but incredibly Tony managed to re-pass Mclean for second place to take the overall win.

English invader, Fraser Wakeford, made his journey up north worthwhile by taking home £300 for his three race wins in the MX2 class. In the first race he whittled away at fast staring Ryan Livingstone’s lead to take the win. At the start of the second race Wakeford dumped his clutch to take the holeshot and establish an early lead. Livingstone and David Houston had a dispute over second place which ended in a “racing incident” leaving Livingstone out of the race and Houston with a lot of catching up to do. This allowed John Adamson into second and he was like a dog with a bone on his YZ125, not letting Wakeford get away and crossing the line three seconds adrift. The third race saw Wakeford cruising to an easy win, followed home by Livingstone and Adamson.

The now very popular AMD Veterans race saw some hard racing giving another maximum score from Darren Scott with the equally consistent Peter Taylor with three seconds. Gordon Morrison was third with, guess what? Three third places. Ian Reid deserves a mention for keeping his immaculate YZ125 wailing all day for fourth overall.

So far this season Alex Kerr has been the man to beat in the Clubman class and he started out as he left off with two race wins followed home by local lad, Douglas Campbell, and Craig Donald.
The third race was won by Craig Donald from Alex Kerr after Campbell crashed out over a big jump.

The youths had their own races on Saturday and “Wee” Jay Clark was again in sparkling form taking three race wins with Logan Hendry and Jack Young squabbling over second and third. This leaves Jay with a perfect score at the top of the championship table. Another maximum man was Owen Hendry in the Junior 65 class, taking three wins to top the championship standings. James Haddow was second with two seconds and Ciara Robertson was a fine third. The 85’s were run together providing two winners, Ben Edwards in the Big Wheels and R J Mackenzie in the small wheels. Big Wheel rider, Elaine MacEachern, rode well with three seconds and Ryan McNicoll was equally consistent with three thirds. The Small Wheel placings were filled by Dylan Carnegie, with three seconds, and Robbie Saville. The 125’s and 250F bikes also ran together with Lewis Campbell taking the 125’s with two wins and Thomas Robertson having a clean sweep of the MXY2.
A big thank you to the Mid Argyll club, all helpers, and landowners, the Campbell family, for all their hard work. Special thanks also to the Sponsors, Safe Access, AMD, AAA Motorcycles, Campbell Dairies and Wiseman Dairies.
