Slippy conditions at Milton Parc for round 4 of British Championship

Round 4 of the Maxxis British championship produced the best racing of the year so far. Changing conditions throughout the day made the racing unpredictable and riders needed to be on their A-game in all 3 moto’s.

Bad luck in race 3 for MVRD’s Leok

In MX1 Tanel Leok was unlucky not to take all 3 race wins after his bike stopped in the final moto of the day. Jonathan Barragan managed to put in the most consistent performance and take the overall, much to the delight of STR KTM team boss Steve Turner. Kristian Whatley finished second on the MBO Yamaha and Shane Carless raced to third in his best ride of his pro career on the Oakleaf Kawasaki.

Shane Carless and his team at Oakleaf Kawasaki must be pleased as punch with his deserved third place finish.

The racing was so close in all 3 moto’s and with Nico Aubin taking the checkers in moto 3 after a superb start. Leok now leads the championship from Whatley and Barragan.

Much the same as in MX1, the boys in MX2 put on a great show in front of a sizeable crowd. EBB took the honours with 1-1-2 scorecard and now extends his championship lead to 40 points. Steven Lenoir put in a brilliant winning ride in the final race in tricky conditions and scuppered Banks Browne’s chance of an unbeaten day. After spending the last few months racing Supercross in the USA, Steven Clarke returned to British championship racing with a confident third place overall finish for his new team HM Plant KTM.

The British Youth Nationals Series got off to a flying start at Wooley Grange with quality grids providing fantastic racing in all five classes in the sunshine. With grids of more than twenty bikes the order of the day, spectators at the most northerly round of the series were treated to two days of glorious competition.

Conditions were difficult – “It was rubbish,” according to 85cc Small Wheel rider Dylan Woodcock – on the Saturday, with strong winds and little rain leaving the track dry and dusty. Dedicated overnight work from the track team left the circuit vastly better for racing on the Sunday.

From the get go, star of the Junior 65cc class was Lewis Hall, the KTM rider taking six out of the seven races over the weekend to steal victory from Husqvana mounted Curtis Trimble. Joel Rizi, also KTM mounted, took third.

Derbyshire lad Hall, racing with #9, very nearly took every single race win. “I came down, then fought back and took the lead again, but then managed to fall again at the next turn, so I’m pretty gutted not to win them all. I can’t complain too much with an overall win, though.”

It was a Kawasaki victory in 85cc Small Wheel, but it was very nearly a KTM victory. Dylan Woodcock stole the overall win by claiming the final race, equalling Nathan Claughan’s 297 score but earning the honours for the round by taking that final win. Harry Kimber was third on another KTN, just eight points further back.

“It’s good to start the season like this,” explained Woodcock after claiming the trophy on the podium. “I’ll try and keep consistent at all the rounds now, and go to Fat Cats with a little more practice under my belt, hopefully get another win.”

85cc Big Wheel saw local knowledge brought forth with Jay Hague, who only lives down the road from the Wooley Grange track, take top honours. The KTM mounted rider beat David Galvin and Albie Wilkie to second and third respectively, despite Wilkie holding the overnight aggregate lead.

“It’s always good to start off with a win, gives you confidence for the season,” smiled the local lad. “I’ll get some practice in for the next round so I’m prepared, and do my best to get a win there too.”

The Open class was dominated by Brad Todd. The youngster, also leading the Maxxis MX2 series, was on top form and stamped his authority on the class with a winning margin of 18 points. The KTM mounted rider beat Jack Kelly into second and Rickie Roderick into third place.

“It’s mega really,” grinned Todd. “I’m totally enjoying the bike and everything’s going well. I’m loving it. I love the jumps and the technical sections here, it really suits my style. For the rest of the season I just want to keep it consistent, keep winning, keep doing what I’m doing!”

The British Youth Nationals also welcomed the Under 23 class for the first time in its history, after the cancellation of the BSMA series. A few no-shows and an early injury meant that only 11 riders took part, but the racing was still close and hard fought. Daniel Hutchinson starred, winning three of the four events to claim the honours. Carlton Husband, who won the first ever British Youth Nationals Under 23 race, took second with Luke Newman third.

“Considering how late we put this together it’s been a good weekend,” explained Hutchinson, another local who showed good speed. “I literally live a couple of miles away from here, but the track was prepared totally unlike any club meeting I’ve had here. At least I knew the layout of the track, so some home advantage. I’m not sure about continuing – I want to be British Champion, but I’d like some more competition.”

The BYN moves onto Culham in Oxfordshire next, and after a thrilling start to the season it will be fascinating to see how the competition stacks up again. Gareth Hockey, of organisers RHL Activities, reckons it will keep on entertaining.

“The racing has been fantastic, the feedback on the format has been positive and the weather was great. We can only hope that that continues at Culham – it’s a brilliant venue and I’m sure we’ll see top turn outs again. I’m really looking forward to it.”

The series races at Culham on June 8th and 9th.

TOM SAGAR (Colwyn Bay KTM 450EXC) continued his winning ways at the Helmsley Enduro at the weekend, winning both days convincingly. Sagar won every test on both days, in fact won the first day by a fair 47 seconds and so holds a perfect score of 80 to head the outright table after two rounds of the 2013 British Enduro Championship.

Sagar’s nearest challenger was Daryl Bolter (Crescent KTM 350EXC) who placed second both days while Jamie Lewis (Edmondson Racing Proseal HM Moto CRE-F450R) had to overcome an early crash to secure third on day one – only to be overhauled by Jamie McCanney (Midwest Husaberg TE125) for the final podium on day two. McCanney holds the championship lead in E1 two-strokes while Jack Rowland (MPS Husqvarna TE250R) scored his own double to lead the E1 four-stroke championship. Sagar leads the E2 class, while Frazer Norrie (KTM 300EXC) twice placed runner-up to Jonny Walker (KTM 300EXC) to maintain the lead in the E3 championship. The Experts were again a hard fought class with Rob Johnson and Joe Wooten sharing wins but Johnson now leads the championship. In the Clubman class Lee Sealey took a pair of wins over Jack Staines to build a decent lead in the championship standings.

THE HELMSLEY ENDURO
Tom Sagar: “Very pleased with that. I planned to go out each day with a fast first couple of tests then gradually ease back to preserve the bike and make sure of the finish. I know I can always expect a good challenge from Daryl and the two Jamies but I seem to have the speed for now, and coming from the win in the European championship I had a lot of confidence. I’m really enjoying my bike as well. I can’t get complacent though and I’ll be doing a lot of practice – especially on grass tests – in preparation for the next round (Knighton).”

Dusty Martin, ACU: “Full credit to John Kerwin and the Dirtbike Action team for putting on an excellent round. I’m glad John at last got some good weather – third time lucky – so as to be able to show what a great event the Helmsley Enduro can be. Having put together a good 25 mile lap plus a fun short-sharp (second) test right next to the refuel, all the ingredients were there for an event that entertained the riders and the spectators. It was great to see a very healthy 160-rider entry as well – everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. An excellent weekend and now we’re really looking forward to more of the same at the Knighton Enduro in July!”

Last Sunday the Premier Mx Team hosted round 4 of the Phoenix Tools Premier Motocross Championship at Waggadon Farm, Nr Torrington in North Devon. There was a huge entry in all classes with many Wildcards including in the Experts three Belgium’s in the Shape of Steve Ramon, Yentel Martins (son of Jacky Martins) and Maarten Cremers who were joined by fellow wildcards Kristian Whatley and Josh Waterman. A lot of hard work had been put in to preparing the track with water having to be put down early morning and even though the track was to get hard and stony later in the day it was to produce some top quality racing again.

In the Phoenix Tools Expert Open Championship it was Whatley on the MBO Sport Yamaha who had set the fastest time in qualifying, but his day started off with a tumble in the opening race at the first turn which caused a bit of a blockage as Ramon and Championship leader Shane Carless who was riding with a broken finger were well down the field as well, with Whatley getting away totally last. James Dodd was to set the early pace from Luke Hill who was all over Dodd looking to pass which he did on the opening lap and was on a mission at the front. Wildcard Martins was soon to catch Dodd who he got pass on lap 2 and was soon to have Hill in his sights. Whatley meanwhile was like a bull in a china shop storming his way up through the field and by the end of lap 3 was up in to 8th. Martins was now breathing all over Hill and was soon to take the lead and started to pull away at the front and by the end of lap 5 he had a 5 second cushion over Luke Hawkins who was now in 2nd, but now in 3rd had come Whatley who was to take Hawkins a lap later and was soon to close in on the Belgium, Martins who he caught on lap 8 and was to really pile the pressure on and forced his way to the front passing Martins at the hairpin and from there Whatley cruised to much applause to take a absolutely brilliant win having come through the field from totally last.

In the second moto it was the Oakleaf Kawasaki of Carless this time with the best start from John May with Whatley there in 3rd. Carless was in a real hurry and May was also going well holding off Whatley for several laps, until lap 3 when Whatley got the better drive out of the telegraph corner and moved in to 2nd and was soon all over Carless who he passed on the next lap. Carless was soon to be caught by Hawkins who had got pass May and this was to be a real battle with Hawkins eventually getting pass. Whatley was flying at the front, but was nearly to come off mid race when he got chucked off his bike and was seen running along side holding on to his handlebars and was able to remount and went on to take the win, but in his efforts he was to get a stone in his face in the closing stages which was to cut his face just above his eye.

In the last race Whatley didn’t start as his eye had swelled up and it was Hawkins on the Phoenix Tools Honda with the holeshot in this one who seemed to find another gear as he stormed away at the front and by the end of the opening lap he was 3 seconds clear of Hill and Josh Waterman. Carless was to give his all on lap 2 and passed Waterman and then got the better of Hill a lap later and was now giving chase. Hawkins did seem to tire a bit towards the end of the race, but the deficit was too much to close and Hawkins took the win and with it has taken the lead in the Championship.

In the Over 35 Championship class again there was some really close racing to be seen as it was Championship leader Mark Wilde who had a blistering start in the opening race and showed his intentions early on and was looking good, but as the race progress Wilde seemed to tire and was gradually hauled in and only just held off Gavin Flagg who got the better of Jamie Deadman on the last lap and finished just half a second behind Wilde. In moto 2 again it was Wilde who set the early pace from Martyn Tucker and Flagg with Flagg soon up in to 2nd and giving his all trying to get pass Wilde which went on until 2 laps from the end when they were to tangle and Wilde went down which was to gift the win to Flagg. In the last race Wilde was out to make amends and again led from the off and literally with a clear track in front of him was in cruise mode and took the win and with it increased his Championship lead.

In the Over 40’s Championship class there was no stopping Steve Locke who put up a fine display of riding taking a hat trick of wins, but there were some good tussles behind him between the two Cornish brothers Johnny and Justin Hawkins and also David Ford.

In the Over 50’s Championship class again the day belonged to Championship leader Keith Hanson who had the bit between his teeth and totally blitzed the rest of the field with a hat trick of wins.

In the Tyremarks Junior Championship the battle was on yet again as in the opening race it was young 15 year old Josh Gilbert with the early lead from Championship leader Jay Thomas with yet another 15 year old Todd Kellett there in 3rd and it was Kellett who was on a mission as he passed both Thomas and Gilbert on the opening lap to take the lead. Thomas was all over Gilbert on lap 2 pushing to get through and through he went on lap 2 as Gilbert was to go over his handlebars in a loose berm. Thomas was to give his all in the closing stages and kept the pressure on Kellett, but it was to no avail as Kellett who was holding his hand after being hit by a stone on the last lap took the win. In the second moto Kellett was still in a lot of pain in his hand and was a non starter and it was Gilbert again with the best start and with a clear track in front of him who was to ease away and was to take a comfortable win with Ryan Williams taking 2nd just holding off Thomas. In the last moto it was Gilbert who made it three hole shots out of three, but this time he had wildcard Craig Callow breathing all over him who was to take the lead on the opening lap, but Gilbert didn’t panic and stuck with him for several laps waiting for a opportunity which was to come 4 laps from the end when Callow nearly stalled it on a slow right hander and through went Gilbert who from there went on to take the win.

Despite the shocking theft from the paddock of five bikes, tools and equipment – this before the event even began – round three of the GT Cup held at Brookthorpe proved to be an otherwise ultimate success. With the magical number of 300 riders yet again achieved the series just builds and builds.

On track Charlie Heyman continued his total domination of the Auto 50cc class by once again winning all five races. With a solid weekend display going 3-4-4-5-4 Callum Murfit nicked section silver. Third on the podium was Jaygo Beasty then followed by Harrison Borg and
Freddie Wyard with Luke Batty rounding out the top six.

The heat wins in the 65cc Junior division went mainly to Ike Carter as he scooped up three. Louie Kessell and Eddie Jay Wade were the other two race victors. Carter backed up with one second place result but one costly error on the weekend dropped him to third overall. Wade won the final heat of the weekend and this coupled to his previous results – (never lower than third) gave him the overall win. Kessell with another polished show settled for second overall. Lewis Wood carded three fifths as best claiming a more than decent fourth overall as Tom Leadbitter and Frankie Cutmore totalled in fifth and sixth.

In the small wheel 85cc division three boys walked the walk best, eventual overall winner Christopher Mills, his Powerband teamster Tom Grimshaw and wildcard entrant Callum Gasson. On day one with Grimshaw a might battered and bruised following a couple of incidents it was Gasson who starred with a 2-1-1 return. Chris Mills won the days opener in a closer than close finish but on day two it was Grimshaw who came to the front taking both heat wins. All totalled in championship terms Mills now closes right down on Grimshaw (second overall ) at the top. Connor Ford was well happy bunny with his third overall – Connors result bested with a points second in heat one. Oliver Cook, Carl Budge, and Callum Beekan fought hard and long for the other podium places.

Going 2-4-1-2-2 Henry Siddiqui claimed a hard fought win in the Big Wheel 85cc section. Henry also taking over as section leader heading into round four at Wroxton. The remaining four heat wins went the way of Albie Wilkie as he put on a truly brilliant show – just one poor result knocking Wilkie back to third overall. Splitting the two heat winners on the podium was Michael Ellis, his weekend bested with a brace of second place returns. Following a poor start, on day two Will Jeonney recovered well with a 3-3-5 show – Jeonney taking fourth overall.

Rickie Roderick was also a four times winner in the MXY2 division. Roderick also carded one second place result for a conclusive overall win. In the title race Roderick is now putting some pressure on leader Kieran Banks. The only rider crossing the line in front of Roderick down in Gloucestershire was indeed Banks as he took second overall. Ben Harrison always looked quick enough to steal a heat win but he had to settle for second in heat one as best and third overall. In a tight old squabble for the places 4-6 Charlie Putnam just got it from Tony Saunders and Karl Noble.

Young bloods going head to head with a more experienced hand proved to be the story line in the 125cc smoker class. Robert Yates and Henry Williams being the whipper snapper duo who won all before them in the opening three heats. Yates won the first two with Williams winning heat three. After this it was mainly all about Davis as he took the chequers first in heats four and five. All totalled with Yates dropping out of the meeting in heat four Davies with a 3-3-2-1-1 card claimed a terrific overall win. Following an awesome weekend show Williams ended up just two points adrift in second overall. Jonathon Roderick Evans ran consistently well for section third overall. Leighton Holmes finished with a day two flourish grabbing fourth as Luke Smith beat off Ryan Butler for section fifth.
In the Adult Clubman MX2 class there was a day one exhibition of how to do it right coming from Greg Hanson as he won both of the days motos. In Sunday action with Hanson not racing Ashley Watt and Scott Hambridge were the days winners. As far as the championship is concerned Scott Hambridge claimed the overall win. Myles Duffy finished in second with Ady Peedle in third.

Clinton Barrs (1-2) and Nathan Watson (2-1) were the star turns winning one heat a piece in the combined capacity Experts on day one. Josh Spinks to his massive credit riding on borrowed machinery was able to put the otherwise disappointments of the weekend behind him (while out on track at least) to record a memorable winning brace on day two. In the championship stakes Spinks increases his lead in MX1 as does MX2 overall winner Seb Osbourne.
