Video: British Masters Youth Review 2009

The hugely successful 2009 Wulfsport British Masters Motocross Championship saw some great racing in all youth classes throughout the season, lets take a look back and remind you what went down.

The Series also saw some top new names emerging, such as Callan Cooper, an amazing young talent, as well as the highly impressive Luke Norris who set lap times some of the Pro’s would have been proud of on his BW Honda 150F.

To win such championships at some of the gnarliest tracks in the country, you don’t just need to be fast…. You require sheer determination, flat of speed, amazing skill, balls of steel, and of course, sometimes a little bit of lady luck!

Small Wheel Mini Masters
The immense Callan Cooper who took the overall accolade in the small wheel class did so in style. Cooper almost went the whole season undefeated which itself is a massive achievement by such a young rider. Of the 28 rides in the 2009 season he finished in top spot a staggering 27 times, finishing second in the remaining moto, where another top class rider, Brad Freeman took the win. Freeman, who took the series by the horns at the start of the campaign by achieving the runners up position at the first four rounds failed to compete in the final three rounds, meaning he ended up in 5th overall position, whilst the improving Charlie Hamlet finished up in the runner up spot by getting three podium finishes in the final three rounds, with an exciting runner up spot at the muddy final round at Whitby. Lewis Wigger rounded out the top three, made special with his magnificent displays at Foxhills which was Wiggers top result!

Big Wheel Mini Masters
The promising Luke Norris also came close to a clean sweep with 23 wins from 28 starts and showed what he is capable of in years to come, especially at certain technical tracks like Foxhills. Seeing this rider fly through the foxhills whoops often quicker than some of the top riders on display that weekend was impeccable. The opening round at Culham saw a share of riders taking some top finishes, including Suzuki mounted rider James Dunn, who finished second overall before making the move up to the MXY2 class. One rider who is looking to go one step better in 2010 is the runner up Jay Thomas who had some very impressive rides, and is clearly one to look out for!

MXY2
The class of the future certainly proved a very exciting one with no less than five riders taking race wins throughout the series, highlighting how competitive this class is and the reason why Proppa.com jumped at the chance to sponsor the 2010 series. The overall winner was the highly impressive Relentless Suzuki rider Matt Burrows who has moved up to Pro class for 2010. Young Burrows didn’t exactly get off to the best of starts with nil points from his first outing at the sandy Culham motorparc, but with much determination, Matt burrowed away at the 60 point deficit to finally come out on top, even with some stern competition. The ever consistent Ryan Mclean, particularly at the magnificent Hawkstone Park circuit scoring two wins and two second places ended up in second overall. Another rider who scored very well, but unfortunately appeared inconsistent was the up and coming Jake Preston, whilst Jack Taylor also made a very late charge on the series and put in some very impressive results. One thing that can be guaranteed next season is that this class will be open to anyone to win!

Top 3 – Matt Burrows, Ryan McLean, Damon Wales
Memorable moment – Jack Taylors debut ride at Landrake, surprising the rest of the field and going out to get the win, forcing Burrows to pull out all the stops in the next race….. which he then won!
