After a highly successful season opening round at Tiverton, back in April.

South west motocross club riders traveled to the Garlands moor motocross circuit near Holsworthy for round 2 of the 2013 championship, on the 12th May.

Average weather was had in the upcoming week for the event, and as practice was underway the weather took a turn for the worse.

The youngest classed riders of the automatics showed some strong flowing speed in the demanding conditions in the practice laps for the event. And the hardcore auto pilots displayed some strong ability for wet weather riding with each rider giving it 110 percent effort.

With the rain continuing throughout the day and the track conditions becoming worse after each block of racing. The club respectively took the fair decision to run two blocks of racing, instead of the usual three.
After a great start to the season in April at Tiverton taking second overall, Finley James raced well and attacked the demanding Garlands conditions to a great standard in both moto one and two taking himself to the top of the auto ranks, claiming first overall.
Riley Watts came into the meeting holding third place, bags of effort and determination secured the young rider second overall.
Bradley Way raced himself to the finish flag taking third overall!

The junior 65cc division performed well in the hardest conditions.
Line choices and minimal mistakes were essential for good results in this class, after two tough races Louie Kessell claimed first place.
Championship contender Jason Down took fourth overall at the opening round in Tiverton. With bags of confidence from the previous round along with strong wet weather riding ability, Jason Down secured and even stronger result taking second overall. Harvey James took third place ahead of Bradley Taylor.

Whilst the always hard trying Alfie Calvert put himself into a decent eighth place in the overall ranking.

Great racing was displayed in the 85cc category. The big and small wheel riders raced together for the day. Great riding was shown by the small wheel 85cc class.
Ryan Mundell had two very strong races shredding through the big ruts finishing the days riding in an unbeatable first overall.
Louis Thomas had a good days racing and respectively took second place.
Todd Sawyer road well all day long and took third place ahead of Thomas Andrews in fourth.
In the big wheel 85cc division race one holeshot, Jake Curtis Stevens performed brilliantly in the demanding conditions at a great pace going on to win the opening moto. With the conditions becoming worse later in the day Jake Curtis Stevens stayed absent from the line up for the second race. Jakes choice to be a non starter in the second moto pushed him rapidly down the rankings, handing the overall victory to Ryan Comer who ripped threw the dirt in a good form in both moto’s. Kieran Yorke had a solid day riding taking second place.
Third place was snapped up by the 2 stroke KTM of Lucy Calvert showing poor conditions were not enough to slow her down.
Sam Gill had a brilliant weekend racing taking fourth overall, after showing great form and style in the hardest conditions.

The rookies class as expected showed some fast paced racing with riders riding to a complete maximum.
The first moto of the day had Jack Roberts and Jamie Buckingham fighting for the lead out front along side Dean Symons.
Just like the other classes the rookies raced just two blocks with shortened lap times, due to the worst of the track being cut out.
Many riders in all classes opted out of the second moto, but as the finish flag threw for the second and final time in the rookies. It was Jack Roberts taking overall victory. A strong performance with great choices of lines helped to snap up second place for Jamie Buckingham. Whilst third was secured respectively ahead of Jack Aggett by Callum Warren.

The MX2 adults class had a great attendance with the class being nearly full for the opening mx2 moto.
Showing pure dominance and superb riding in such poor conditions was the husqvarna rider of Leighton Holmes. Storming at a good pace and trying to keep of the limiter, Stuart Smith was holding second shortly behind Holmes in the early stages of the race. Whilst standing out in the pack as a great rider, newly upgraded from the rookies, Korey Kidd was looking on top form at the front of the pack a perfect start to the hard days riding.
The second and final moto of the day was as for everyone the hardest conditions, despite with the shortened track. Leighton Holmes had another strong riding snapping up the overall win!
Ben Puddy had his great riding credited with second ahead of third placed, Micheal Goldsworthy.

In the MX1 class raced together with the VMX adults class.
With local motocross sensation Luke Hill attending riding his 250 2 stroke machine to save his four-stroke race machine from the conditions.
As expected in the opening moto it was Luke Hill on a charge at the front leading the mixed class around. After a dominating performance taking the moto one win. Luke Hill again in moto two dominated from gates to flag, taking overall victory! The racing behind him was close, Ryan Redwood claimed second overall. Whilst two great results secured strong riding Scott Ardren third overall. In the VMX rankings it was Gary Down that claimed the overall win!
Mark Pickard secured second. Whilst third was grabbed by Ben Braddick.

The club would like to thank everyone who had input in the meeting.
And would also like to thank all the riders for attending and doing there best in the poor conditions.
The clubs next event is this bank holiday weekend , 26th & 27th May at Cheddar moto park!
This event is club championship rounds on both days so cannot be missed.
The event is also in conjunction with south somerset mxc, so book in early to avoid disappointment.
See you there..!

East Kent ravelled north of the Watford gap for their 2 day meeting at Pineham. The second day was a championship round but a lot of members travelled up for the weekend and the world famous Bingo!

Showers on the Saturday made the track “interesting” but the riders all coped very well. First out were the AMX and John Eaton dominated the group on both days, winning 4 of the 6 races and taking the overall win on both days. Adam Cooper won the first race on the Saturday but had to settle for 2nd overall in the end on both days, despite some hard chasing. Barry Hannan rode very consistently all weekend to achieve a well deserved 3rd spot on both days. A stone on the bridge of his goggles gave Sam Underhill a nasty swollen nose and “Two Lovely Black Eyes”!

The Open Group riders were next and again, one rider dominated the group, only losing the win in one race all weekend. Ryan Matthews stepped up to take the chequered flag in that race. But even then, Michael Deeley came from last back up to 3rd! He was easily the fastest out there, with Lee Hopcraft, Mike Greenfield, Tony Hale and Ryan Matthews all chasing him.

The Senior group was the usual eager line up and yet again, it was dominated by a single rider. This time it was Connor Dennis who took the group by storm, winning 5 out of the 6 races. Sadly he had an off in the 5th race and so lost some points, thus giving Jack Norman, who had fought to overtake Connor all weekend, the overall top spot for Sunday. Connor had to be satisfied with 4th after his 1st overall on the Saturday. Joe Russell rode well to take 3rd on Saturday with Brad Robinson and Joe Dubens taking well deserved 2nd and 3rd respectively on the Sunday.

DSC_6257
DSC_6439

At the risk of repeating myself, the Big Wheels saw exactly the same pattern! Tom Lockhart took 5 out of the 6 wins but getting stuck in the gate meant he started very last in the final moto. He still managed to get back to 2nd place though so took the overall win on both days! There was some good consistent riding in this strengthening group. Ashdon Manktelow took 2nd on both days with Marni Saunders 3rd on the Saturday. On Sunday, with the arrival of more riders, Michael Eggett took the 3rd spot on the podium.

It sounds incredible, but the Small Wheels saw Ashley Surridge win 5 out of the 6 races! Kyle Macgregor had been having trouble getting out of the gate fast up until this weekend. With 5 out of the 6 holeshots, he appears to have resolved that problem! There was very little between the top 5 or 6 riders and it was anyone’s guess where they would finish! In the end, Charlie Burt kept his speed up to achieve 2nd overall on Sunday, with Adam Caroleo getting 3rd. Special mention should be made of the kindness of Ashley Surridge. On his lap of honour he stopped to help Harry Kemp, who had come off his bike and couldn’t start it again. Ashley put his own bike down and started Harry’s and then finished his lap of honour. Nice one Ashley!

The Junior group is getting faster with each meeting and believe it or not, Bobby Bruce won 5 out of the 6 races at the weekend in the Junior group. Billy Carter took his only win then but had to be satisfied with a well deserved 2nd place overall on Sunday, having got the overall win on the Saturday. Raife Broadley ran consistent times and tried his hardest too. He got 3rd overall on Sunday, whereas Alfie Card took the 3rd spot on the Saturday.

The Autos saw 2 different winners on each day – on Saturday Aiden Monks was victorious in every moto and on Sunday, Harrison Borg scored maximum points. Joe Osbourne got 2nd overall on the Saturday, but that spot was taken by Tom Ovenden on Sunday. Mackenzie Green road well to take 3rd overall on Saturday but the final place on the podium on Sunday was taken by Harvey Fagg. These riders are also becoming quick, considering they are in the entry level group. It’s always good to see the little ones becoming so keen.

Finally a huge thank you to the committee for all their hard work this weekend – especially Tina, who ran the whole meeting incredibly well. Thanks also to the medics and best wishes to Ryan Hayward for a speedy recovery. A special thanks to Ann and Sarah for making a mercy dash across England to pick up a cable for the transponder system on Saturday evening, thus enabling the system to work on Sunday! See you all at Lamberhurst on the 19th.

Words and Images Ann Cooper

Coventry Club ‘s 1st meeting of the year at their home track Stratford resulted in 180 riders attending the meeting on a fully graded and prime circuit despite the recent poor English weather, and the club did well to get everyone into the paddock following a heavy down poor late Saturday.

The AMX Class kicked off the day’s racing after a later than normal start on the Sunday due to the Club’s medical provider being caught up in a fatality on the motorway with visiting Jordan Bachelor showing the rest of the pack how to master the demanding track that is Stratford with an excellent first race win followed by Joseph Russell in 2nd and Ricky Lethaby in 3rd. Race two and again Jordan took the win with an outstanding ride by Jake Lord in 2nd place and Joseph Russell in 3rd after his Hole Shot.

The Seniors saw Curtis Blamey cruise to a first race win with Daniel Neale in 2nd and an excellent race for Joe Tobutt in 3rd place. Race two and hole shot for Curtis Blamey followed by his 2nd race win this time closely followed home by Daniel Neale in 2nd and Gareth Artus in 3rdwho didn’t let his first race gremlins keep him down.

Josh Spinks dominated the Open Class with the first race win with returning to the club Scott Hubbard taking 2nd and Luke Haughton in 3rd. Race two and hole shot for Josh Spinks together with a deserving second race win, Scott Hubbard again 2nd and 3rd this time for Brad Doyle who battled Luke for the remaining podium place.

The old age pensioners next to the line (the over 45’s) and the first race win for Richard Main, second for Luke Brown and third for Sean Doyle. Race two and this time the win for Luke Brown with Richard Main taking 2nd and the hole shot and third place going again to Sean Doyle. The crowd love this race and we eagerly await their next race.

Big Wheels Race one saw a brilliant, entertaining race from start to the finish line with Henry Siddiqui taking the win followed by Mitchell Warhurst in second and Harry Linton in an excellent third place. Matt Brame constantly battled to keep 4th place from Tyrone Cleaver in 5th.

Callum Green blitzed his way to the win in the Small Wheel group with Dylan Spencer taking 2nd place and Charlie Kent taking 3rd after battling the whole race. Kieran Ryan raced his heart out for 4th place and an excellent race for Lewis Huckerby in 5th.

The very talented Juniors saw James Hyett cross the finish line first ahead of Battling Ben White in 2nd and Dylan Woodhall in 3rd. Harrison McCann tried everything to get onto the podium but ended with 4th place and 5th going to Jacob Russell.

Finally the Auto’s had their outing onto the tricky Stratford circuit but William Hyett made the race his own with an excellent first place win ahead of Kyle ingram in 2nd and Riley Harrison in 3rd. Jack Lillyman and KaydeRayns battled non stop with Jack taking 4th and Kayde 5th.

Race 2 of the Big Wheels saw Tommy Pittaway fly out of the start to take the hole shot but unfortunately due to an injury to a rider the race was stopped in the 3rd lap.

Following the length of time it took to treat the injured rider and with wet weather on the horizon and closing in quickly the decision was taken to stop the meeting and present the trophies and prize money together with 1,2,3 goody bags kindly donated by Pro-Green MX to the winners and enable the riders and their families to leave the paddock and head for home.

Coventry Club would like to thank everyone for their patience and help during the day, especially their medical crew and send very best get well wishes to Danny Vieira and his family.
