The deep Dutch sand of the unforgiving Valkenswaard circuit proved a tough test for the Buildbase CCM Racing team, with neither Tom Church or Jason Dougan showing their real potential throughout the weekend. Church particularly struggled at the fourth round of the 2009 FIM Motocross World Championship after having just returned to racing following a virus that had forced him to miss the previous Grand Prix in Turkey.
With twenty-seven year old Church using the weekend to regain some of his early season speed, his younger team mate Dougan had the opportunity to step into the spot light with two top twenty finishes despite the conditions being far from his liking. With the exception of pre-qualifying practice on Saturday afternoon, the twenty-two year old Phoenix Tools rider Dougan out performed his more experienced CCM teamster throughout the two demanding days of action.
Fairly pleased with his showing Dougan commented. “ Although the results are not outstanding, I am quite happy with how things have gone given the fact that sand is not my favourite kind of track. Although I never got out of the gate that well in the first race I managed to creep into the top fifteen after the first couple of turns. But just as I thought I was away, someone bobbled in front of me, I hit them and went down. I was dead last by the time I got going again, but just kept plugging away, so nineteenth was OK considering.”
Jason continued. “I held back at the start of the second race and shot up the inside of the first turn to end up in the top ten. I got as high as eighth, but after about fifteen minutes my back began to get really sore, and I had no choice but to ease off slightly which saw me drop down the field.”
With realistic expectations about his first meeting back, Church stated. “It was hardly the best race to come back to, but at least I have survived it and can now build from here for the forthcoming meetings. If I am totally truthful I am still not 100% and need some more time back on the bike before I can be back to where I was before the illness. In the first moto I was in and around the top twenty for nearly the whole race, but just went backwards over the last few laps.”
“I got a slightly better start in the second moto and was feeling quite comfortable in nineteenth place, but then it all went wrong with just three laps to go. It was a good crash, and took me a little while to get up and to try and get the bike started. Unfortunately the DNF was a disappointing end to the weekend, but hopefully things will be better at the British championship round at Brampton next Sunday.” Church ended.
The Buildbase CCM Racing team will be looking for improved results next weekend when they resume their assault on the 2009 Maxxis ACU British Championship, where to date they have enjoyed their best performances of the season.
