16 year-old Utag Yamaha rider Mel Pocock continued his run of good form at the British Championship at Hawkstone Park in Shropshire. In perfect sunny conditions Mel qualified a strong third, his best qualification to date.
Race 1 saw Mel get a good start and he came out of the first corner in third but a bump from Elderfield demoted him to ninth. He got his head down and chased the leading pack who had pulled away and rode well battling through to fifth place, but a few scary moments on the whoop section and through the trees saw him lose his rhythm and soon Bradshaw was past. Mel composed himself and rode well to maintain his position and crossed the finish line in sixth.
In race 2 Mel got another great start and came round in sixth, he was soon working his way up through the pack and this time looked a lot smoother and more confident on the Utag Yamaha 250F. In a replay of the first moto Mel battled with Bradshaw and despite his efforts the older and more experienced rider pushed on past. Mel hung on to finish in third, a career best that gave him fifth overall.
Mel Pocock “I’m really pleased to get a fifth overall and finishing third in the second race is my best result so far. I trained hard this week after my French result last week and I was really happy with my qualification and starts. I am feeling positive about the next round and hoping for another good result.”
Steve Dixon “I was pleased for Mel today, it’s a shame he lost three months earlier this year through injury as I think he could have achieved a podium at this stage of the season. People forget he has been injured and the fact that he is still only 16 years old. Hopefully Mel can score points again in Germany this week and continue his good form.”
The team now head to Germany for round nine at Teutschenthal. Zach Osborne will be back in action the following week at the Latvian GP at Kegums, he is working hard to maintain his fitness and expects to be back on a bike in the week before Kegums in preparation for his comeback race.
