Smith goes it alone at Foxhill

Wayne Smith and the rest of the Samsung Yamaha Motocross team arrived at Foxhills yesterday for round six of the British Motocross Championship and looking for a good haul of points to push further up the championship standings and Wayne was starting the day in 7th.

With Mark Jones out for the remainder of the season and replacement Dorren Coutts, also injured,it was just Wayne Smith to fly the blue and white Samsung Yamaha flag in the mx2 class.

Qualifying went well for Wayne on the ultra fast hillside chalky circuit, clocking a time of 2.25.9 which placed him for 11th pick on the gate and only 1.4 secs behind 4th so close were the times that a good start was to be imperative.

Race 1

Wayne got a good start on his Samsung Yamaha machine and was 8th from the initial off but was soon down a couple of places in 10th and the first few laps he was swapping places, back up to 9th before a small mistake and a crash cost him another two positions where he then settled down into a steady 11th position for a number of laps before regaining and consolidating 10th position once again. For the second half of the race such was the gap of the riders in front of him it was going to be a huge ask to make up any more places, not for the lack of trying, so it was a race one 10th for Wayne.

Race 2

This time Wayne gated 11th and settled into that position for the first few laps until he got comfortable with the fast and frantic race pace. He was embroiled in a freight train of riders in Mel Pocock, Graeme Irwin and Scott Elderfield.

On lap four of the fifteen lap encounter Wayne got past Pocock and Irwin and into 9th which he then held for the next eight laps and made another pass stick with three laps to go putting the Samsung Yamaha into 8th. Then on the last lap, race leader Stephen Sword retired with a broken chain moving Wayne up another place to 7th, good enough for 9th overall on the day and still consolidating 7th in the series with two rounds remaining.

It’s now a two week period of rest for Wayne before resuming the next round of the Red Bull Pro Nationals at Canada Heights on Sunday Aug 16th where he will be looking to keep his championship lead and hold onto to the all important red plate.
