Jacko moves into third place in the championship with an overall win.
The first weekend in September (5th & 6th) saw the seventh and penultimate round for the participants in the ADAC MX Masters series 2009. This took the riders round the 1,800 meter long traditional “Schützenbühlring” track in Holzgerlingen, roughly 20 kilometres south west of Stuttgart. Once again in the starting line-up for the ADAC MX Youngster Cup class was the young British rider Jack Brunell (Sturm Racing Team) from Old Windsor, Berkshire, who had travelled to Holzgerlingen as fifth-placed in the championship.
In Saturday’s continuing autumn weather conditions Jack already proved in the first training session how well prepared he had gone into the race weekend with the second fastest lap time in his group and how quickly he is able to adjust to a track still strange to him.
„When I first saw the track I really liked it. It had a lot of jumps and the soil was nice. It was nice to ride with some really cool jumps. The first practice session went really well. I found a good rhythm with the bike.”
The Sturm Racing Team youngster later managed to up the ante in the qualifying session. With a time of 2:10.14 minutes he not only rode the fastest lap of his class during time practice but set the fastest lap of the whole weekend.
„In short: the qualifying went amazingly well! I managed for the first time this year to get a clear lap with no mistakes. I felt so good on the bike and everything went well, so I am really happy.”
The Sunday was as good as its name: sun shining down from clear blue skies with temperatures in the 20′s setting the scene for great motocross weather. This also pulled a lot of spectators to the track: around 10,500 of them following the thrill of the racing live on the spot, according to the organisers.
The man most up for it on this day, however, appeared to be Jack Brunell. In the first race in his class the 20 year-old grabbed the best start and snatched the lead with a holeshot which he defended right up to the finishing line. “Jacko” still delivered an exciting dual for first place with Angus Heidecke in the final stages of the race in which the Sturm Racing Team youngster always maintained the upper hand.
„The first race was awesome! I had been having problems with my starts so I sat down with Robbie Sturm and we talked about the bike. We decided to change the clutch and it worked. I flew out of the gate and I got the holeshot! I just rode as fast as I could and managed to pull a good lead. I was about 5 seconds ahead but then Heidecke started to catch me slowly. Lap by lap he was getting closer but there was no way I was going to lose this race! He caught me until we were less than a second apart and we battled for the last few laps. I was trying so hard to keep pushing and I nearly made a mistake on the last corner. I crossed the line in first and was so happy! It was the best possible way to say thank you to Robert and the team, my parents, Jens, my sponsors and all my fans.”
Even in the second race Jack left the gate with the leading group taking the first corner in fifth place and gradually worked his way forward to second place by the end of the first lap. After leading thus far Heidecke left the race in lap two with a technical problem and Jack was now able to take the lead. Not wanting to risk his overall win, he made a tactically astute decision towards the middle of the race after a brief dual when he relinquished his lead to the Russian rider Alexandr Tonkov and subsequently rode home to a safe second place.
„I got another good start and by the end of the first lap I was second when Heidecke suddenly stopped. I took the lead and pushed as hard as I could. I could see Tonkov coming but I knew I didn’t have to beat him to win overall. I tried pushing but I didn’t want to make any mistakes. He passed me and I followed him for a few laps as I felt more relaxed behind him. Towards the end of the race I slowed down a little to cross the line in second place.”
With one victory and one second place from both motos, a quite satisfied Jack Brunell climbed onto the top step of the podium at the end of the day and celebrated his first overall win in the ADAC MX Youngster Cup. With the hard won 47 points from Holzgerlingen Jack has advanced to third place in the championship standings.
„The weekend was perfect: I had the fastest time, I won the first race and I won the event overall. I’m over the moon! … I’m so happy that I managed to win the event as I never expected to win a race this year. I just want to thank the whole team for all their support and especially Robbie for changing the bike.”
The finale of the ADAC MX Master 2009 will be held in four weeks (10th, 11th October) at Höchstädt in the Fichtelgebirge (Bavaria). Jack will be doing his utmost to defend his current position in the championship and maybe even improve it.
