Tommy Kelly takes honours at BYMX Brampton

The Low Gelt Farm Track at Brampton Cumbria saw the Express Insurance BYMX Championship once again visit this excellent sandy track for the penultimate round of this year’s championship. The event was once again hosted by the East Cumbria MXC and credit must go to all that had put in the hard work to make sure the track and facilities were in place to host this the sixth round. The weather was its usual self, but the racing was excellent and some upsets were had in all the classes.

Keenan Hird in the Junior 65cc class took his first overall this year and with some stylish riding all weekend, he was the worthy winner with a 3-1-2-2-1 result.  Taylor Hammal took race one and scored well in the other races to take second overall, while still the series leader Albie Wilkie with a 4-3-3-1-3 scorecard finished third overall. Alexander Brown also took a race win in race four and finished a creditable fourth with James McFayden fifth and young local lad Daniel Bewley sixth.

In the Small Wheel 85cc class it was the Cornish Rebel Josh Gilbert who came out on top after some confident displays of riding all weekend. It also saw him take over at the top of the championship albeit with a 15 point lead. Josh only won one race but scored good points in all the races to take the overall, while Oliver Osmaston who now lies joint second in the championship with Robert Yates finished his weekend off with second overall, after two wins in the final two races. Another rider who suffered on day one was Jay Lamb, but he excelled on day two to take third overall with some good riding and a couple of second places. Greg Hyett took race one but didn’t show on day two of the proceedings, after an injury ruled him out. Another rider who won was Conrad Mewse, who took Race two, but again he retired from the fourth race with problems and this ended his weekend. Robert Yates, Alfie Bowtell and Lewis Houghton completed the top six overall after some excellent battles together.

Adam Sterry extended his lead in the Big Wheel 85cc class with another outstanding display of riding and coolness, with a 1-2-1-3-2 scorecard he came out the overall winner. James Harrison took a race win in race five to put him in second overall, with yet another Honda rider completing the top three Liam Garland who also took two wins in races two and four but had to settle for third overall. Ben Watson, Jack Kelly and Michael Eccles rounded out the top six. Sterry now leads the championship by 23 points from Watson who as 247 points, while just behind is Kelly on 228 points. This one looks like a last round slog by all the riders and will be one to watch.

In the Youth Open class it was Tom Kelly who took the honors’ and the overall sixth round event first place, and also took over from Nathan Watson in second place in the championship just 23 points behind series leader Connor Walkley. Walkley suffered a race four disqualification after he was adjudged to have taken Watson out with dangerous riding, but still managed to take the last race win and finish fifth. Flying Scot Ryan McLean rode his heart out all weekend to take third overall after some great displays of on the peg riding in the deep sandy conditions, Nathan Watson claimed fourth place, with Jake Gowan rounding out the top six places. Gary Sharp took the second overall, even though he got stuck in the gate in race two, had a puncture in race five but all in all he rode some excellent races and claimed two wins to top his weekend off and leave him just 8 points from Watson in the championship.

Racing at the weekend also were the British Two stroke boys and it was John Richardson who claimed the overall with four wins and a third place in the 250cc class. Luke Copping won race one from Ryan Pottenger but could not compete with Richardson on day two. Pottenger ended his day one with a massive get off down the hill and ended his weekend finishing third overall.

James Dunn showed his class in the 125cc class by taking all five race wins with ease, leaving Bryn Clarke and Charles Statt to battle it out for second. Clarke took it and Statt settled for third. Corrie Nemeth and Callum Sloman rounded out the top five.
