Motul Pirelli Suzuki’s rising star Todd Waters was victorious at Coolum’s final round of the MX Nationals, Australian Motocross Championship, on Sunday, sealing second overall in the premier MX1 standings aboard the fuel-injected RM-Z450.
The 21-year-old Gold Coast resident entered the weekend 14 points from the series lead and did everything he could to overcome that deficit during the season finale on the Sunshine Coast, winning motos one and three, plus also finishing runner-up in the second moto. Those results saw Waters fall 11 points short of the title, but it has been a brilliant inaugural campaign for the 21-year-old on debut with Motul Pirelli Suzuki, racing to nine podiums in 10 appearances.
“We did everything that we could do to win this championship, but on a positive note we end the season knowing that we were the fastest around Coolum,” Waters reflected. “It’s nice to know, but to be honest we ran out of time. We kept Josh Coppins honest the whole way but as soon as I got it down to a few points he’d put it straight back up. I’m pumped for Josh and he deserves it.”
Third overall at Coolum for Motul Pirelli Suzuki team-mate Cody Cooper elevated him to the final podium position in the series directly behind Waters. The experienced Kiwi was third in all three motos at Coolum, continuing his strong finish during the season’s second half.
Said Cooper: “I’m stoked, the team worked really hard and I did too. We switched suspension for the last two rounds and it’s been awesome. I’ve worked hard on my starts and I just really want to thank Motul Pirelli Suzuki. My mechanic Nathan does an awesome job and the bike is always awesome. I can’t ask for more, really.”
Motul Pirelli Suzuki team manager Jay Foreman was proud of both riders’ efforts after an ultra-competitive season. He said: “It has been a very strong year for the team and both Todd and Cody have ridden exceptional throughout the season. For Todd to win the final round at Coolum was a nice way to finish and to also have Cody climb onto the podium in the series was a great bonus. It’s been a real team effort.”
Both Motul Pirelli Suzuki riders will contest next month’s annual Motocross of Nations event at Lommel in Belgium on September 30th with Waters representing Team Australia and Cooper selected for the New Zealand team.
