A weather lottery for East Kent at Staplehurst

The weather lottery continued as East Kent prepared to race at the Staplehurst track. Will it rain? If it does rain, how much? Previous meetings had seen wet forecasts and no rain, so the track was well prepared and very well watered. Practice started and the heavens opened! The order of racing was rearranged and luckily the clouds moved on and for the majority of the day the sun shone and a strong breeze blew. The conditions meant that the riders who like mud did better than others and so some of the results moved around a bit this week.

The Seniors were first out as usual – and what better group to take the brunt of the mud! It was a Lapscorers nightmare as the majority of the riders slid all over the track! Not so for Piers Skinner, who made it look easy and won his first ever race at East Kent in style! Congratulations Piers! Shaun Springer was back in first for the next two races, and Piers took second overall, with Rupert Douglas riding consistently fast to take 3rd overall. Well done, too, to John Eaton for his best ever result in the Seniors!
The AMX came out next and Paul Willis on his 2 stroke definitely had the advantage, winning the first 2 races, but bike trouble in the last prevented the hat-trick. Louis Waugh took the 3rd win, but had lost points in the first muddy race. This meant that Joe Cundle, who is riding superbly at the moment, took the overall win, with Graham Heasman, another smooth and consistent rider, in second. Louis’s win and a second in the second race took him to third spot overall.
There was a reversal of fortunes in the BW85’s as Jack Eldridge led from the start in the first race and then rode strong races to win all three motos. This meant that last meeting’s winner Lewis Dowsett had to be satisfied with second overall this time and Zach Peters took a well-deserved third place.
Daniel Packman continued his uninterrupted lead at East Kent in the SW85’s. John Waghorne took the lead for a while in the second race, but Daniel soon got it back! He took all three moto wins, leaving John and Mitchell Lewis on equal points. John took second overall with a higher place than Mitchell.
There were no surprises in the Junior races this week. Callum Heasman won all three races with his usual speed and determination. Albie Wilkie could only watch Callum’s tailpipe as he came in to take second in every race. Tom Lockhart rode steadily and consistently to take third place on the podium.
The Autos were last out and the track was drying well by this time. The top three riders are well clear of the rest of the group in the championship but now only 9 points now separate them! An off in the 2nd race meant that Lewis Cloud had to be satisfied with the 3rd step on the podium. Reagan Brooks was back to winning form though and took the overall with steady fast riding. After taking the lead and pulling away, Gary Ashley won the second race, which eventually resulted in him getting second overall.
Many thanks to the committee, marshals and medics for a great job. Next meeting is Lamberhurst on 7th June – see you there!
