Winter champs start for East Kent

The first round of the Winter Championship dawned bright and fair at Lamberhurst. The track had been prepared well (thanks to Adam Hawkins) and the racing was eagerly anticipated. This meeting is always interesting as many riders upgrade for it and it nearly always produces very different results from the summer championship recently completed. And today proved to be no exception especially as the winter championship is also open to non-club members, and they add to the changes!

Charlie Earley in the SW group was one of the several ‘firsts’ this meeting when he won the first race holding off Joe Buscaglia. This was Charlie’s first ever win – well done! Nathan Turner-Whittle, newly upgraded from the Juniors earned a second place in the second race, behind Taylor Smith, who also won the third race to give him the overall win, with Charlie Earley in second and consistent riding giving Louis Close 3rd place on the podium.

The Juniors’ result was more expected with Tom Lockhart getting two race wins and a second place to give him his first ever overall win! Tom Borrett could not catch him in races 1 and 2 but achieved his goal in race 3 with a well deserved first victory at East Kent – well done to both Toms! Michael Eggett wasn’t far behind in all three races to gain the third spot overall.

The Autos gave the usual lead-swapping excitement and Charlie Burt and Reagan Brooks had a real battle of the podium! Charlie won races 1 and 3, with Reagan in 2nd place, but the placing was reversed in race 2. This gave Charlie the overall win with Reagan in second place. Jack Nixon rode steadily and consistently to take the third and final spot on the podium.

The Seniors’ races promised some new riders in the top places as the majority of the top riders in the summer championship were either absent or had upgraded. Chris Chapman had great first and third races, winning both, but bike trouble forced a retirement in the second race. Frankie Bennett took the overall win with a 2nd, 1st and 3rd in the three races. This was Frankie’s first ever win and to achieve the overall as well was a great result! Congratulations Frankie! Harrison Utting rode steady and fast races to take second overall, despite an injured shoulder and John Stevens finished in third place.

The AMX saw several riders upgrading from the Seniors and also some former club members returning to ride. One of these was Troy Beck, who rode superbly with a new smoothness and maturity to take the second and third wins and the overall. Louis Waugh rode well to win the first moto and get second place in the 3rd one, but an off near the start of the second kept him out of the top three – although he came through from last to 4th! The third race saw former senior Adam Cooper beat age and experience to get the holeshot and lead for a couple of laps before Troy and eventually Louis got past to move him back to third place. Some hard and determined riding from Matt Hornby gained him the third place overall and it was good to see him returning to form.

Our thanks to the committee and medics for all their hard work and we wish the injured riders well and hope to see them back soon. Next round is at Newnham in the 18th November – see you then!
