After being part of Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s three-headed monster in 2011, Blake Baggett had his chance to step into the spotlight this year. It wasn’t an easy season by any means, with the likes of Justin Barcia, Eli Tomac, Ken Roczen and Marvin Musquin contending for wins week in and week out. Still, Baggett pulled off an impressive feat, grabbing the red plate at Hangtown and never letting go of it.

Unadilla represented the 10th round of the 2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship. Not only was it the 10th round of 2012 but it was the final round that would affect the race for the overall season title as Ryan Dungey closed the door on the 450cc competition with his 8th overall win of the season that clinched him the year’s win — this marked Dungey’s second overall 450cc title win and KTM’s first ever! The five men who star in MOTO 84 all know exactly what it takes to be a winner. Tony Cairoli, Ryan Dungey, Jeffrey Herlings, Mel Pocock and the great Ricky Carmichael were all winners in 2012, all champions, and it these heroes of our sport we salute in MOTO’s Champions special issue.

One of the biggest stories of last year’s offseason was Ryan Dungey, the 2010 champion of the 450 Class, taking a leap of faith to join Red Bull KTM. With a few of the heavy hitters sidelined, the 2012 season was set up to be a showdown between Dungey and James Stewart.

Everything changed at Thunder Valley though, and Dungey ripped off ten overall wins in a row to recapture the #1 plate. Relive the highs and lows of an incredible season for Dungey that included intense battles with Mike Alessi, a pit stop at Southwick, and the first Lucas Oil Pro Motocross title for KTM.

KTM has been the most aggressive motorcycle manufacturer in American Motocross for the last three years. The goal for those working for the Austrian-based brand is clear, bring KTM their first premier class championship in the United States. The process involves reinventing their machines, the pursuit of the sport’s top technicians and racers, and the uncontrollable movements on race day.

The final round of the 2012 Lucas Oil Motocross season brings a dramatic conclusion to the 250 Class championship. Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider Blake Baggett has held the red plate all year and looks to wrap up the title. Chad Reed took a tumble back in February that required him to be removed from the race track and onto the operating table in early March. Since then Reed has had his second child and has been taking his first born to the track for some mini bike laps. Reed has just begun to get back on his bike, and although he is bummed to miss MX he is ready to bring it all to SX.

Ken Roczen knows what it takes to be at the top. At 15, he became the youngest Grand Prix Motocross winner at his home GP in Germany in 2009. He then went on to race Supercross in the States and hasn’t looked back.
