The Milton MX Park circuit was in good condition for racing following the extremely wet winter the country has been suffering. Heavy rain overnight on Thursday and with more rain forecast for the coming days has left ACU Events with no options but to cancel the event.

After consultation with the ACU Motocross department the Sidecar round will not be rescheduled due to date restrictions within the Sidecar Calendar. However the ACU will look to replace the Quad round later in the year.

Never backwards in going forwards, innovative series promoter e22sports is taking top-flight motocross to the famous Somerset seaside resort for the first time.

“If I have one goal it’s to take every round of the Red Bull Pro Nationals to city centre venues,” explains e22sports Managing Director Matt Bates. “Obviously, that’s never going to happen but the next best thing you can hope to do is go to a town like Weston-super-Mare that’s got a big population, lots of visitors and a prime site in a region that’s very strong for motocross.”

The track build – overseen by Johnny Douglas Hamilton – is expected to take up to a week taking advantage of May low tides and will result in a technical circuit with a lap time of up to two minutes for the Pro class. It will be constructed along a stretch of the famous Weston seafront south of the resort’s pier.

“I’m really, really excited about this,” adds Matt. “Getting the general public to come to a motocross event is incredibly hard – it’s something I’ve been trying to do with great results since the Red Bull Pro Nationals started back in 2009 – so why not take a motocross event to the general public?”

The weekend will feature the full compliment of activities that have become intrinsic to the Red Bull Pro Nationals’ family festival feel with Motocross Experiences, electric bikes and balance bikes aimed at introducing newcomers of all ages to the joys of two-wheeled riding. Sunday will also see Freestyle Motocross shows, trials displays from Dougie Lampkin, world-class aerial acrobatics by the Red Bull Matadors and children’s TV favourites in the Kidzone.

“I’m delighted we will be working with e22sports to stage this event,” adds Councillor Felicity Baker, North Somerset Council executive member for tourism and leisure, “as it will give Weston and North Somerset even more exposure on a national and international basis. Matt and his team have a strong track record in the sport and this is yet another example of the commitment we have given to attract a wide variety of events to the area.”

The event will enjoy the benefit of being part of the whole National Series which includes the ACU Adult Quad Championship. With the Adults having just two races, it will be the Youth Classes who enjoy most of the track time at the spectacular sandy circuit with four races planned throughout the day for all of the Youth Classes.

At this meeting we shall be launching our innovative water guarantee system – where, by means of a 70 metre deep bore hole, together with 5 Solar Panels and associated pumps and pipes etc., we should be able to keep our supply pond topped up throughout the year. This facility would have been unmatched in the drought of two years ago – but was completely upstaged by the weather last year when even the pond just about disappeared under the waves!

The technicians decided that we needed 5 Solar Panels to generate the electricity required and we have installed them in the middle of the pond itself in order to discourage the light fingered criminals that like to lift anything that has a value these days. Incidentally the amount of machinery and effort that was put in by Stuart to install the Panels was impressive and their position suggests that they are unlikely to get stolen. I hope!

We carried out an in depth survey of the Marshalling requirements at Milton where we have 19 individual Posts to consider. The cost of providing adequate manning is very high and this lead us to decide to install a Light System at some locations. The ACU’s Motocross Committee have approved the project in principle and we hope to be able to demonstrate it generally at the March 31st Practice Day. Assuming the tests to be successful, there are numerous advantages to such a system, all financial – and we will also be able to let the equipment out when it is not in use and so assist other Clubs and maybe their hard pushed Treasurer’s.

Having introduced Transponder Timing to Milton a couple of years ago – we are now delighted that the local Centre and Clubs have decided to embrace the idea too for the 2013 season – so we should be able to see absolutely seamless Results Systems being produced this time around. It is amazing how long it took for this system to catch on generally, but, there we are, and it’s implemented now.

We have also decided to ease off some of our infamous jumps where, truly, fortune favoured the brave in a number of instances. The idea generally is to introduce a fast section and to make the course more suitable (and enjoyable?) for Club Riders, Quads and Sidecars. Also our televised 4 Round Milton Championship.

Finally, for this year, everyone using Milton will also be using our in house Medical Services. The reason for this is that our staff are more experienced with the “hot-spot features” of the circuit and that everyone can be happy in the knowledge that any rider suffering injury requiring hospitalisation will be despatched there straight away without having to endure the sometimes lengthy wait for a County Ambulance to arrive on the scene. Accidents are things that generally happen to other riders – but when occasionally they do happen to us it is nice to know that the Organisers have taken all possible steps to ensure a very high standard of care!
