After last Friday’s meeting with Giuseppe Luongo of Youthstream where ideas were put forward regarding major changes to the World Motocross championship, internet forums and social media sites are on fire with what and if these ideas are possible.

Below are the basics of what was discussed in Portugal.

A possible reduction in engine capacity in Mx1 with a new class name of MXGP in 2 years time. (350/380 was mentioned)
New venues for 2014 Melbourne, Aus – Sugo, Jap – Goa, India.
Shorter 1st races with less points, longer 2nd races with more points – this could start in 2014.
A possible Euro 2stroke series with 300cc bikes.

Many are suggesting that the main reason why the MX1 in particular is short on riders is cost, 1000 euros to enter is expensive, if you look at the European championship entry list it had 80 or so riders at a cost of 300 euros – so is it all about the money?

If it is COST lets test the water at the British GP, lets set the entry fee at 300 euros for both MX1 and MX2 classes and fill the start gates up. If it doesn’t work at least we can say we tried.

Youthstream it’s over to you guys.

Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MX1 and MX2 teams both head to Italy this weekend for round 4 of the World championship and all riders are looking forward to racing the hard pack track of Arco DI Trento.

We catch up with two of the riders who explain how they feel going into today’s race.

Clement Desalle:
“It was good practice in France at the weekend,” the 23 year old said. “I haven’t ridden too many non-GP races recently and it was good to be in another paddock and say hello to some old friends. There was a feel of an International meeting about it.

“Lacapelle was beneficial because the ground was hard-pack with small and loose stones, something similar to what we might find this weekend,” he added. “We didn’t change the bike. The base setting was ideal and this is what we’ll go into the Grand Prix with.

“I rode at Arco di Trento in 2010,” the Belgian continues. “I just used the track for practising and I liked it. It is definitely picturesque with the lake close by.”

If I close my eyes now then I don’t remember too much of the layout but there were some nice and small uphill and downhill sections. Of course it might have been altered for the GP but we’ll see.”

Julien Lieber:
“I’ve not been there before but I quite like what I see from the videos of the Italian Championship,” Lieber said. “It looks hard and challenging and quite good fun. I’m pleased with the setting we have on the bike and to be honest I couldn’t ask for more.

“We are only three rounds into the season but I’m happy with how it has been going,” added Lieber who was riding and training in France over the weekend. “I’ve been in the top 10 more times than not and this was my goal starting the season. I want to be a constant presence in every moto and try to be consistent. We will find many different tracks and conditions so being ‘there’ every week is important.”

Our second venture, after a canceled Canada Heights, takes us to the old school track of Cadders Hill for round three, where wildcard Tommy Searle returns once more with the red plate in MX1. In MX2 it’s local rider – turned GP Podium winner Jake Nicholls looking to take on the defending champion Elliot Banks-Browne. The sun also made its first appearance of the year allowing everyone to finally dry out from the wash out round 1 in Doncaster.

Despite the appalling weather conditions for the first round of the ACU Maxxis British Motocross Championship, Buildbase Honda leave FatCat Motoparc in Doncaster with a solid result, putting team riders Steve Ramon and Nico Aubin in fifth and sixth position in the championship respectively.

With a substantial rainfall causing a water-logged track, the decision was taken to run the event using wet rules, meaning no superpole and a two-race format.

In the first MX1 moto, Nico Aubin got the holeshot and left the line with every intention of stamping his authority on this championship from the start, but a small incident in the opening stages caused the Frenchman to drop down the order to the fringes of the top-10, eventually crossing the line in 11th place. Meanwhile, Steve Ramon took a steady approach to the first race of the season, finishing in a solid fourth place.

In moto two, track conditions deteriorated when yet more rain and even a snow shower fell on the sand circuit. Aubin consolidated his first race position with a creditable fifth, with new-comer Ramon struggling a little in tough conditions and low temperatures to a finish of in 12th, putting him fifth in the championship standings, closely followed by teammate Aubin in sixth.

In MX2, Stephen Sword finished the first moto in a respectable 11th place. Unfortunately for moto two, despite a great start and running in fifth position, Sword had an off-track excursion into a sandy bog, regaining 26th place come the flag.

World MX2 champ Jeffrey Herlings came deliciously close to putting his MX2 bike on the podium for the combined MX1 and MX2 Superfinal race at the swealtering Thai GP in front of 17,000 fans.

The Superfinal – where the top 20 from the MX1 face the top 20 MX2 – was easily won by world Mx1 champ Tony Cairoli who earlier had cleared off in the first MX1 heat to take the red plate from Clement Desalle.

With Cairoli totally dominant, it was all eyes on Herlings as he fought through from a top 10 position to eventually challenge third place Desalle – who had just been passed by Gautier Paulin. Herlings nosed ahead for a couple of corners, but the big MX1 Suzuki just blasted past.

“He just opened the gas and pulled away,” said Herlings. “With three laps to go I hit some bumps and almost crashed, so I backed it off and took a safe fourth place. I was leading the MX2 class by more than 40 seconds anyway.”

Paulin, the only rider to be clearing a massive leap on the circuit, scraped by Desalle then felt the Belgian’s fury afterwards.
Desalle fumed: “He went out of the track but kept it on full gas. Then he came back on the track and hit me, which hurt my foot.
“You can’t just go where you want to go all the time. That’s why I’m angry.”

The pass meant Frenchman Paulin took Desalle’s second overall in the GP, and Cairoli’s win meant he lost the MX1 championship lead.
Fourth overall was Briton Tommy Searle, getting closer to the leading trio’s speed all the time. He was fifth in the opener then fourth MX1 bike in the Superfinal – even though he was behind his former nemesis Herlings.

It wasn’t a good day for TM’s Shaun Simpson, as he took 18th overall thanks to a 15th place MX1 finish in the Superfinal after crashing in the first corner of the first race.

Jamie Law took 20th overall thanks to a 17th place finish in the opener but Jason Dougan failed to score in both races, but did qualify for the Superfinal this week after missing the cut last week in Qatar and having to ride the last chance qualifier.
In the MX2 class it was Herlings all the way, while Romain Febvre took runner-up overall from third placed Jose Butron.
Max Anstie was best of the Brits in ninth overall thanks to a gritty third in the first outing, but he struggled in traffic in the Superfinal.

Mel Pocock took 14th place overall which seemed a disappointing result after two good finishes just outside the top 10 in both motos.
But the hardest luck was for Jake Nicholls who was running third in the opening moto until his brakes cooked and he crashed hard. He got back on and battled only for his throttle cable to break a few laps from home. It had been damaged in the crash. Then in the Superfinal he went down hard at the end of the first lap but remounted to rescue a few points for 18th overall.

James Dunn and Elliott Banks-Browne rode well in the opener but had bad luck and dropped out of the transfer slots, as did James Cottrell. None of them made it through the last chance qualifier so didn’t get out in the Superfinal.
