The ACU were deeply shocked to hear the news that Si Higgins had been tragically killed on Friday evening (5th April) in a freak accident whilst carrying out some preparatory work on the Motocross circuit at Whiteway Barton.

Our condolences go to Brian Higgins and his family during this very sad time and the family have posted the following message in memory of Si.

Si Higgins – Husband, Son, Brother, Uncle, Friend, Racer & Organizer, whatever he did he always gave 110%, he prided himself on being the best he could at everything he did & always did it with that cheeky grin of his.

Loved & respected by so many people even he would be amazed.

He made a massive impact on the Motocross world & everyone who met him, he will be sorely missed by them all.

As well as loving his family & his job he had a massive love of motorbikes. He was a great rider when growing up & then turned to being a great organiser in recent years. Along with his good friend Rob, together they ran Premier MX & the Phoenix Tools Championship, it was their baby & 2013 was shaping up to be their best year yet. Si loved every part of it & enjoyed every hour he put into it. He would thank you all for supporting it this season so please keep it up.

He died on 5th April 2013, In a freak accident at Whiteway Barton/Phoenix Moto Parc whilst doing what he loved, preparing the track for us to race that weekend. Luckily Rob was with him at the time. He was airlifted to hospital but died shortly after arrival.

Our hearts go out to his family & friends, especially his wife Emma.

Funeral Details

The funeral and Celebration of Life of Si Higgins will be on Monday 22nd April at 2pm at the St Eustachius Church in Tavistock. Everyone is welcome. Family flowers only, but donations can be made if you wish to the Devon Air Ambulance.

Topping the Expert Open Championship is Welshman Shane Carless on the Oakleaf Kawasaki who has a slender 4 points lead over the Phoenix Tools Honda of Luke Hawkins, but as with the first two rounds there is plenty of other talent in attendance like Luke Hill, Jamie Skuse, Lewis Gregory, Jackson Evans, John May, Tommy Alba plus many more.

Also featured will be the Junior Championship which has yet another Welshman leading the proceedings in the shape of Jay Thomas, but he will be joined by the likes of Ryan Williams, Anthony Milliar, Josh Gilbert, Todd Kellett, Josh Taylor to name a few.

On Sunday even though most events across the country had been cancelled due to the bad weather, the Premier Mx team were luckily enough to be able to host round 2 of the Phoenix Tools Premier Motocross Championship on what was a bitterly cold day at Fraddon Moto Parc, nr Newquay in Cornwall and with it had attracted many wildcard entries including MBO Sport Yamaha rider Kristian Whatley. Again a lot of effort had been put in to preparing the track to a high quality with believe it or not, water having to be put down late Saturday evening which was to produce a brilliant days racing in all classes.

In the Phoenix Tools Expert Open Class unfortunately there was no Championship leader in the shape of Alex Snow, who was a non starter after having surgery on a long going shoulder injury, neither was there no third place rider in the standings Darren Shears as he had a nasty tumble whilst practicing prior to the event, but there was plenty of other talent in attendance.

In the opening race it was Luke Hill on the DirtbikeXpress/HPR Honda with a blistering start from team-mate Tommy Alba with Luke Hawkins on the Phoenix Tools Honda tucked in 3rd. Whatley had a terrible start and was well back, but was soon on a mission and was absolutely flying through the field. Hawkins had got the better of Alba on the opening lap and was soon breathing all over Hill, but Hill held strong and didn’t give an inch until lap 5 when a slight mistake let Hawkins in to the lead.

Whatley was now up in to 3rd and was soon all over Hill who he passed a lap later and was soon to catch Hawkins which turned in to a real tussle for several laps until on lap 8 when Whatley found away pass on a lefthander and hit the front and from there went on to take the win with Hawkins 2nd and coming through to take an excellent 3rd after a battle with Hill for several laps was Jamie Skuse.

In the second moto it was Hawkins who had the best start from Oakleaf Kawasaki’s Shane Carless and John May with Whatley there in 4th. Hawkins was in a real hurry in this one and was starting to get away, but up in to 2nd after the opening lap was Whatley who was quick to close down Hawkins lead. These two again as with the opening race were to thrill the spectators with some real fast and furious racing with Hawkins doing his upmost to keep Whatley at bay, but on lap 7 Whatley got the inside line out of a right hander and hit the front. Hawkins did come back, but it wasn’t to be as Whatley took the win, Hawkins 2nd with Carless finishing in 3rd.

In the last race this time there was no messing as Whatley hit the front from the start followed by Hill and Hawkins. Whatley had a clear track in front of him and by the end of the third lap had a cushion over Hawkins who was now in 2nd, but the real battle was going on for 3rd between Hill, Jackson Evans, Skuse and Carless who were all over each other. Whatley went on to make a hat trick of wins with Hawkins taking yet another 2nd and coming through to take 3rd in the closing stages was Evans.

In the Over 35 Championship class there was again some top racing to be seen but at the end of the day there was only one winner and that was Mark Wilde on the S J Hodder Suzuki who once he hit the front there was no stopping him. Martyn Tucker was to give his all in the opening race and did lead, but a mistake on lap 2 saw him go down which let Wilde through. Wilde had the holeshot in race 2 and went on untroubled and in the last race again it was Tucker who led the opening couple of laps before yet another mistake was to let Wilde through who went on to notch up a hat trick of wins.

In the Over 40’s Championship class it was all about two Cornish Brothers who were to share the first two race wins, but in the last on it was Johnny Hawkins who took the win after Justin Hawkins had a bad start and was unable to get back in to contention.

In the Over 50’s Championship class the day belonged to Keith Hanson who seemed to get to grips with the conditions from the word go and was to put together a fine display of riding with a hat trick of wins, but there was a good battle for 2nd and 3rd in all 3 races between Ian Nott and Simon Goodfellow who was making his return to racing, but in the end it was Nott who took 2nd overall and Goodfellow 3rd.

In the Tyremarks Junior Championship class again the Championship leader was absent and we were about to have a new Championship leader at the end of the day, but who would it be. Having his first ride in the adults was young 15 year old Josh Gilbert on the 250f Dave Thorpe Off Road Centre Honda who had started well clocking the fastest time in Qualifying and this was to continue as Gilbert had the holeshot in the opening race and powered away to take a convincing win. In the second moto there were a few fallers at the first bend and one of them was Gilbert who was well back. There early leader was Ryan Williams from Oliver Ford and Anthony Milliar, but it wasn’t long before Milliar on the A T Motocross Honda was up in to 2nd and was closing in on Williams.

This battle went on for several laps, but all eyes were on Gilbert who was flying through the field and gain all the time. Milliar was all over Williams looking to get pass, but every time he had a go Williams would shut the door until again as he did at the opening round when leading a race, Williams picked up a rear wheel puncture which in the end was to gift Milliar the win. Williams held on to take 2nd with Craig Callow taking 3rd, but taking a well deserved 4th was Gilbert. In the last race it was Gilbert again with the holeshot from Jay Thomas and Williams. Gilbert was in a real hurry at the front and was starting to get away by the end of the opening lap but up in to 2nd had now come Milliar with Williams in tow. Gilbert was to be gradually hauled in and on lap 5 was forced wide by Milliar who took the lead and Williams also went pass Gilbert on the same lap. Milliar was put under huge pressure from Williams, but Milliar was to hold his nerve to take the win by literally a whisker at the line.

In the Expert Open Championship it is Oakleaf Kawasaki rider Alex Snow who heads the Championship but is unfortunately sidelined with a shoulder injury.
Also featured will be the Junior Championship which saw some excellent racing at the first round especially between Welshman Jay Thomas, Ryan Williams and young 15 year old Todd Kellett with Kellett eventually taking the overall who goes into round 2 with a 13 points advantage over Thomas, but there is plenty of other talent on offer including young Cornish wiz kid 15 year old Josh Gilbert who returns from injury, Anthony Milliar, Gradie Featherstone, Ty Kellett and Stephen Bain to name a few.

In the Over 35 class all eyes will be on Cornish king pin and defending Champion Jason Fraser who will be looking to do well on his home track, but it won’t be easy as joining him are the likes of Rick Hanson, Jamie Deadman, Mark Wilde, Gavin Flagg and Rob Lewis plus more.

Last Sunday the Premier MX team got things going in the South West with the opening round of the 2013 Phoenix Tools Premier Motocross Championship at Phoenix Moto Parc, Kingsteignton. A lot of effort had been put into preparing the track to a high quality and it was to produce a brilliant start to the 2013 series. It was what could only be described as a bitterly cold morning, but never the less spectators were there in numbers to watch some top class racing not just in the Experts but also in the Over age and Junior groups.

In the Phoenix Tools Expert Open Class there was great expectation as there were not just top South West riders, but also many British Championship riders including the likes of Stephen Sword, Lewis Gregory (who was on a 125) plus many more who had registered for the 2013 series.

In the opening Expert race it was Welshman Shane Carless on the Oakleaf Kawasaki with the best start from Luke Hill and Alex Snow with several riders getting pushed wide including Sword who was well back. Carless was in a real hurry at the front and started to ease away from Snow who had got the better of Hill on the opening lap and was soon on the gas as not to let Carless get away at the front. It wasn’t long before Snow was to catch teammate Carless and was to pile on the pressure and was to eventually take the lead on lap 3. Hill was soon to come under pressure and was passed by both Jake Shipton on the Phoenix Tools Honda and the PCMP Yamaha of Darren Shears who had a blinder of a opening couple of laps, but unfortunately for Shears he was to go down a couple of laps later when challenging Shipton for 3rd place.

Meanwhile back at the front Snow had still not shaken off Carless who was in striking distance, and his chance came on lap 8 when Snow got held up by a backmarker and Carless pounced on the opportunity. Snow did give his upmost to get pass again, but it was to no avail, Carless took the win with Snow 2nd and after a mid race tussle with Shipton it was Luke Hawkins who was to take 3rd.

In race 2 it was young 16 year old Tommy Alba on the DirtbikeXpress/HPR Honda with the holeshot from Snow with Sword on the 250f Dave Thorpe Off Road Centre Honda who had a better start this time in 3rd, but Sword was soon to be right at the back of the field after an opening lap tumble and up into 3rd was now Shears. Snow was soon to hit the front and once he did he was soon into a rhythm, but not giving up the chase after passing Alba on lap 2 was Shears who was actually lapping quicker than Snow on several laps, but in the end it was Snow who took the win with Shears who put in a gallant effort taking 2nd with Carless eventually finishing in 3rd.

In the last Expert race it was the turn of Hill to have the best start this time from Carless and Wayne Shimmell with Sword again getting pushed wide. Hill was put under huge pressure by Carless on the opening lap, but he held on until midway through lap 2 until he made a slight mistake and through went Carless to take the lead. Snow and Shears also passed Hill on the same lap and were both closing fast on Carless at the front. Snow was to catch and pass Carless on lap 3 and up into 3rd had come Hawkins who had got the better of Shears and was soon to get pass Carless to move into 2nd. Shears however was to dig deep mid race and was soon all over Carless and was being urged on by the vast crowd to get pass which he did and was to give chase. Snow was to be put under a bit of pressure from Hawkins near the end of the race but it wasn’t to be, Snow took the win, Hawkins 2nd with Shears to much applause taking a well deserved 3rd.

In the over 35 Championship class the day belonged to wildcard entry Nick Life who normally rides Enduro’s who lived up to his status as a all rounder with a fine display of riding to take a hat trick of wins, but there were some good tussles behind him especially between Rick Hanson and making a return to racing after several years Jamie Deadman with Hanson just piping Deadman at the end of the day to be top registered rider and with it the early Championship leader.

In the over 40 Championship class yet again there was some good racing to be seen with defending Champion Paul Ayres carry on from last year winning the opening race, but he had no answer in the other two races as it was Simon Hart who was to take both wins.

In the over 50 Championship class there were two wins for Keith Hanson with Ian Nott after a hard battle mid race coming through to deprive Hanson a hat trick.

In the Tyremarks Junior Championship class there were many new and up and coming names including Jay Thomas who had a blistering start in the opening race as did Ryan Williams who was all over Thomas like a rash on the opening lap which was thrilling the crowd. Thomas did his upmost to sustain the pressure but in the end it got the better of him towards the end of lap 2 and through went Williams in to the lead. Williams was absolutely flying at the front and had a cushion by the end of lap 4, but then disaster struck as he picked up a rear wheel puncture which was to hamper him and back in to the lead went Thomas who was to go on to take the win with Anthony Milliar taking 2nd from young 15 year old Todd Kellett.

Race 2 saw Gradie Featherstone with the early lead which was short lived as through cam Todd Kellett on lap to catch and pass Featherstone to take the lead and from there went on untroubled to take the win, but there was a good battle for 2nd and 3rd with Milliar just holding off Luke Sturgeon in the closing stages. Race 3 saw Christian Dicks with the initial lead before being passed by Todd Kellett on lap 2 and once Kellett had hit the front there was no looking back as he went on to take a comfortable win from Williams with Thomas taking 3rd.
